The embroidered silk postcard is a common souvenir of the First World War. They are blank postcards onto which an embossed paper frame has been glued, to hold a central piece of silk. On the silk, a design is hand-embroidered in coloured thread. It is generally patriotic or sentimental. This one is exceptional in that it is made of a silk pocket with flap on which is very finely embroidered the Allied flags from many countries among which Portugal, Italian Kingdom, Romania, Serbia or Montenegro, altogether making a V pattern (for Victory?). Also embroidered in a single colour are the words "To my dear cousin" . In the silk pocket is a small unwritten pre-printed insert. The back of the postcard carries a message written in ink, probably in Dutch. Military souvenir cards of this type were sold in thin paper envelopes but were seldom sent through the post in them. They were too fragile and, more particularly, they were not cheap souvenirs. Usually they were left unwritten, and mailed with letters to protect them.
